Making Impact Sustainable
Running a social enterprise is a tightrope walk.
We’re not chasing profit to please shareholders. Yet we need financial stability to survive. We’re not a charity, yet grants keep us breathing. We want to change the world, yet must operate within market realities.
This is the beautiful tension we navigate daily.
The Honest Truth About Our Model
While other businesses focus solely on the bottom line, we measure success differently:
- How many people reconnected with nature today?
- Did community bonds strengthen in our gardens?
- Are we helping steward the environment while sustaining our operations?
When a participant tends seedlings and something shifts in their sense of agency – how do we measure that? When a corporate team discovers insights while building a garden bed that they couldn’t find in a boardroom – where does that appear on a balance sheet?
The market wants scalable, predictable, quantifiable results. Social change is none of these things.
The Measurement Challenge
As a small, local organisation, demonstrating our impact comes with unique obstacles:
- Social change doesn’t fit neatly into quarterly reports
- Our team is busy growing things (both plants and people)
- The most meaningful impacts are often the hardest to quantify
- Every person we work with brings different needs and measures of success
We face a daily choice: spend our limited time delivering programs or documenting their effects.
The tension is real. We need grants. We pursue earned income. We reinvest everything. We push toward sustainability. But we refuse to compromise on our core purpose to get there.
Why This Matters
In a world that values what it can measure, we’re committed to measuring what we truly value—even when that’s messy, complex, and impossible to reduce to a spreadsheet.
This is the work that matters. And with your support, it’s the work that continues.
